Malikah is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to combating gender and hate-based violence, founded after our founder Rana Abdelhamid experienced a hate-based attack. As a Muslim Egyptian woman growing up in Queens, NY post-9/11, Rana faced the challenges of navigating a world where fear and misunderstanding were often projected onto her community. This personal journey fueled her passion for creating a space where women, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, could find healing, empowerment, and a sense of belonging. Malikah was born out of this need for solidarity and safety, as well as the desire to combat gender and hate-based violence in a world that often marginalizes the most vulnerable.

We offer self-defense training, healing justice, financial literacy, and organizing programs to empower individuals and communities. We collaborate with community-based organizations (CBOs), private sector partners, public schools, and religious institutions to amplify our impact. Our mutual aid hub and base-building efforts in Queens, NY, serve immigrant, working-class North African communities, as well as recently arrived African asylum seekers.

Through intensive bootcamps, community summits, weekly events, and one-time programs, we expand access to our curriculum and training by partnering with organizers and trainers. Our movement is rooted in a community safety framework that elevates the leadership of marginalized groups within our communities.

  • What We Do

    Healing Justice

Our healing spaces center the collective well-being of individuals. We draw from traditional and holistic practices to create environments where people can connect, listen, and support each other through difficult conversations. Healing is a lifelong process, and we provide the tools to help people come together, foster understanding, and build meaningful relationships, whether at home, in a mosque, or in a community space.

    Economic Justice

Our economic justice programs equip women with the skills and knowledge to take control of their financial futures. From financial literacy to entrepreneurship workshops, we provide essential tools to help women overcome pay disparities and reach their full economic potential. Whether it’s budgeting, investing, or launching a business, we support women in building their financial independence.

    Organizing

Creating lasting change requires action, and Malikah trains women to organize, build power, and create meaningful impact in their communities. Our grassroots organizing curriculum focuses on leadership, storytelling, relationship-building, team structure, and strategic action. We believe in the power of collective effort to transform systems and uplift communities.
